Amila | Floral Chiffon Halter Maxi Dress

A printed chiffon maxi that carries the occasion on its own. Amila has a halter neck that leaves the shoulders and back bare, a wrapped waist and a skirt that keeps moving after you have stopped. Five colourways of the same watercolour floral.

The halter neck. It rises into a soft band at the neck and fastens behind, so nothing sits on the shoulders. That is what leaves the whole shoulder line and the back bare without the dress needing straps.

The gathered bodice. The chiffon is gathered from the neck down to the waist rather than cut flat. It gives shape across the bust and skims instead of clinging.

The wrapped waist. A wide band of the same fabric crosses over at the waist and holds everything in. It is the narrowest point of the dress and what separates the bodice from the skirt.

The maxi skirt. Cut wide and falling to the floor, with enough fabric to open out when you walk and settle again when you stop.

The chiffon and the lining. Fine chiffon on the outside, a soft lining underneath. The lining is what makes it wearable in daylight: the print floats, nothing shows through.

The print. Watercolour flowers, painted rather than drawn, in five grounds: sage green, lilac, pink, deep purple and blue.

What to wear underneath

The back is open and there are no shoulders, so a normal bra is out. What works here is adhesive cups or a halter-style bra that ties at the neck. The skirt is lined, so briefs are fine, though seamless ones are the safe choice under fine chiffon.

Size guide

In New Zealand sizes: S is a 4-6, M is an 8-10, L is a 12-14 and XL is a 16.

The waist is the fitted part of this dress. If you are between two sizes, go for the larger one: there is room everywhere else, but not there.

Care

Hand wash cold or a delicates cycle in a bag. Chiffon does not like heat: dry hanging, out of the sun, and iron cool on the reverse if you need to.
